Thorough Examination of Hoists and Associated Lifting Equipment

Hoists are widely used across construction, industrial, warehouse and commercial environments to lift loads safely and efficiently. As lifting equipment, hoists and their associated lifting accessories must be regularly examined to ensure they remain safe for use.

Excel Inspection Solutions provides independent LOLER Thorough Examinations of hoists and associated lifting accessories in accordance with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. Our inspections help dutyholders meet their legal obligations and manage lifting risks effectively.

What LOLER Requires for Hoists

Under LOLER, hoists used for lifting loads must be:

  • Suitable for the intended lifting operation

  • Installed and used correctly

  • Thoroughly examined by a competent person

  • Maintained in safe working condition

  • Clearly marked with safe working load information

LOLER requires hoists to be thoroughly examined at least every 12 months, or every 6 months where lifting people or where conditions require more frequent inspection.

Types of Hoists We Inspect

Our Engineer Surveyors inspect a wide range of hoisting equipment, including:

  • Electric hoists

  • Chain hoists

  • Wire rope hoists

  • Manual hoists and pull lifts

  • Beam mounted hoists

  • Fixed and mobile hoisting systems

  • Hoists used in industrial, construction and warehouse settings

Where applicable, associated lifting accessories are examined as part of the inspection.

Associated Lifting Accessories

As part of our LOLER service, we also inspect lifting accessories used in conjunction with hoists, including:

  • Chain slings

  • Wire rope slings

  • Textile and webbing slings

  • Shackles, hooks and connectors

  • Eyebolts and lifting points

Each item is assessed individually to ensure it remains safe for continued use.

What We Check During a Hoist Inspection

A LOLER Thorough Examination of hoists typically includes:

  • Visual inspection of the hoist structure and components

  • Condition of chains, ropes and lifting mechanisms

  • Operation of controls and braking systems

  • Condition of hooks, safety catches and load attachments

  • Verification of safe working load markings

  • Inspection of suspension points and mounting arrangements

  • Review of previous inspection records where available

Any defects are clearly recorded with guidance provided on continued use or removal from service.

Why Regular Hoist Inspections Matter

Regular inspection helps to:

  • Prevent lifting failures and dropped loads

  • Protect workers and surrounding personnel

  • Maintain compliance with LOLER

  • Reduce downtime and unexpected breakdowns

  • Provide documented evidence for insurers and auditors

Hoists are often subject to heavy use and harsh conditions, making independent inspection essential.

LOLER Reports and Certification

  • Following inspection, we provide a digital LOLER report detailing:

  • Equipment identification

  • Inspection findings

  • Any defects identified

  • Clear recommendations and timescales

  • Confirmation of compliance status

  • Reports form part of your statutory lifting documentation.
