Garage Equipment Inspection – FAQs

How often does garage lifting equipment need to be inspected?

Under LOLER, most lifting equipment must be thoroughly examined every 6 or 12 months depending on its use. We can advise on the correct interval for each item.

What if my vehicle lift fails inspection?

We’ll clearly mark any non-compliant items in your report and advise whether it needs to be removed from service until repaired or replaced.

Do I need to keep physical inspection records?

Records must be kept but can be digital. Our reports are provided in PDF format and meet LOLER/PSSR record-keeping requirements.

Are compressor inspections included?

Yes. Compressors, receivers, and other pressure vessels are covered under PSSR. We offer these inspections alongside LOLER assessments.

Do you inspect equipment in MOT bays?

Absolutely. We inspect equipment in MOT bays, fleet garages, and commercial workshops across the UK.

Vehicle repair centres rely on a wide range of lifting and pressure equipment every day - from vehicle ramps and engine cranes to axle stands and pressure vessels. With heavy loads involved, the risk of equipment failure can be serious. That’s why regular inspection and compliance with LOLER and PSSR regulations is not just a legal obligation – it’s vital for protecting your team and customers.

At Excel Inspection Solutions, our qualified engineer surveyors carry out thorough examinations of garage equipment across the UK. We work to current HSE guidance and statutory regulations to help you remain compliant, insured, and operational.

What garage equipment can be examined?

Any equipment in your garage that lifts, supports, or raises a vehicle or part of one is likely to fall under LOLER or PUWER. This includes:

  • Vehicle ramps

  • Engine cranes

  • Axle stands

  • Jacks

  • Mobile column lifts

  • Two-post and four-post lifts

  • Scissor lifts

Pressure systems such as air compressors and receivers fall under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR).

We inspect most brands and models, including equipment installed in MOT bays, body shops, and fleet workshops.

How are LOLER regulations enforced?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) enforces LOLER. If equipment is found to be in poor condition or posing a safety risk, the HSE has the authority to issue prohibition notices or prosecute duty holders.

Garage operators are legally required to ensure that lifting equipment is examined at the correct intervals, reports are retained, and items are removed from service if deemed unsafe.

At EIS, our reports are provided digitally and include clear photo documentation. All records meet LOLER and PSSR requirements and are easily accessible for review or audit.

PUWER and garage equipment

While LOLER applies specifically to lifting equipment, most garage tools and systems also fall under PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998). This includes power tools, presses, ramps, and jacks. PUWER places duties on employers to ensure that all work equipment is suitable, maintained, and inspected.

We offer combined LOLER and PUWER assessments as part of a single visit, ensuring your equipment is safe, compliant, and ready to use.

Why regular inspection matters

Regular inspections are a legal requirement, but they’re also an essential part of maintaining a safe and productive garage environment. Faulty or poorly maintained equipment can lead to serious accidents, legal penalties, and downtime that affects your entire operation.

Our inspections help identify issues early, giving you time to act before they become safety hazards or costly failures. With a proactive inspection schedule, you not only protect your team and customers – you also extend the lifespan of your equipment and meet the expectations of insurers and auditors.

Benefits of regular inspections include:

  • Maintaining compliance with LOLER, PUWER, and PSSR

  • Identifying worn or damaged equipment before it becomes dangerous

  • Reducing the risk of workplace injuries

  • Meeting insurance policy conditions

  • Avoiding costly downtime or enforcement action
